Michael McCaul: Russian invasion of Ukraine likely
United States lawmaker Michael McCaul says a “strong message of deterrence” from President Biden to Russian President Vladimir Putin is “lacking” and an invasion of Ukraine looks likely.
Speaking to Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur, Mr McCaul - who is the lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and one of the party’s most senior voices on international affairs - warned that the end of February is particularly high risk.
“February 20th is an important date,” he said. “It’s the end of the Olympics, the ground will be frozen, the tanks can roll in”.
Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite massing more than 100,000 troops near its border.
