Sandy Hook: US gun company to pay $73m to victims' families
A gun company that manufactured a rifle used in one of the US's deadliest school shootings has now settled with the families of victims for $73m.
The settlement from Remington Arms comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the families of nine of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting, which took place in 2012.
The case marks the first time a gun-maker has faced liability for a mass shooting.
Until now, the industry had immunity from litigation.
Scarlett Lewis, whose 6-year-old son Jesse was among those killed, spoke to Newsday.
She said: "When you lose a child, it is always with you... Our children should not be expected to defend themselves in their schools. First-graders should not have to stand up to a shooter coming into their classroom."
