Brazil floods: 'Search and rescue' as 100 die after torrential rain
More than 100 people have died in landslides and flash flooding in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis, officials say. The city, which is located in the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro, was hit by torrential rainfall. Houses in hillside neighbourhoods were destroyed and cars swept away as floodwaters raced through the city's streets.
The storm dumped nearly a month's worth of rain in a matter of hours, causing mudslides that buried homes, flooded the streets, and washed away cars and buses. The mayor of Petropolis has declared a state of emergency.
Christopher Hassan lives there and has been out on the streets helping with the search and rescue operation. He says, "It's really more of a search and rescue of situation right now, with people trying to find anyone that's missing, and take account of what's going on, but right now it's really just shocking".
