Colombia partially legalises abortion
A landmark ruling from Colombia's top court on Monday decriminalised abortion up to 24 weeks into a woman's pregnancy.
The ruling in this majority-Catholic country makes it one of only a handful of Latin America countries to permit the procedure.
After 24 weeks abortion will only be granted in certain circumstances like rape; if the health of the mother is in danger or if the foetus has a fatal condition.
Newsday has been speaking to Paula Avila Guillen, a Colombian lawyer in New York who specialises in human and sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America. She is also the Execute Director of the Women's Equality Centre.
