Thousands of African students stuck in Ukraine
As Russian air strikes hit Ukraine, thousands of people are packing up and leaving Kyiv for the countryside or the border with the European Union. Traffic jams clog the roads out of some cities and many people are walking into Poland and Hungary.
However many are staying behind – among them Kenyan students Rashid, Asya and Stephanie, who live in Kiev, Odessa and Kharkiv respectively.
They are not staying out of choice. They would like to return to their homes in Kenya but with air-space closed, difficulties accessing funds and no right-of-access to neighbouring countries, they are appealing to the Kenyan authorities to help them: “Get us the visas in to Poland and then facilitate transportation back to Kenya”.
