'We are in Russian hands' - Kherson falls to Russian military

Resident of Kherson describes life under Russian military control in Ukrainian port city.

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its second week, Russia has for the first time admitted taking heavy military casualties during its invasion with 498 troops killed and a further 1,597 injured.

The southern port of Kherson has become the first major city to be taken by Russian troops. The mayor said soldiers had forced their way into the council headquarters and set conditions for allowing the local administration to keep flying the Ukrainian flag.

To find out how this is affecting residents, Newsday heard from one resident of Kherson who is trapped in the city with his wife and 3-year-old daughter.

“The mayor is literally taking instructions from the Russians. We cannot go outside after 6pm. No one is supposed to leave the city. We are in Russian hands.”

"The city government has failed completely, there should have been more control like rationing or something. There are empty shelves (in the supermarkets). The prices have tripled.”
