Ukraine: 'People are fleeing with only the clothes on their backs'

The United Nations's refugee agency says a million people have now fled Ukraine since Russia invaded a week ago. The head of the UNHCR Filippo Grandi describes it as an exodus and says it's time for the guns to fall silent so life-saving humanitarian assistance can be provided. The UNHCR senior external relations officer Christine Pirovolakis told Newsday three quarters of those fleeing are either mothers with children or older people, and they are in dire need.
“A lot of these people are fleeing with only small suitcases (or) only the clothes on their backs. They’re looking to escape as quickly as possible.â€
“We are seeing indications that there are children that have been left so that the mothers can return back to continue fighting with their husbands. In that instance UNHCR is working with local authorities (outside Ukraine) to identify very early (unaccompanied) children that are in need of protection.â€
