Ukraine conflict: Russian censorship sees independent media stifled

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its second week, the only independent TV station in Russia, Dohzd, was taken off air by the Russian government over allegations of ‘fake news’. Now, the board of Ekho Moskvy, the leading liberal radio station in Russia, has decided to liquidate its radio station and website after coming under pressure from the authorities over their coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Film maker Vera Krichevskaya says that military censorship on the media was imposed as soon as the invasion began. This forbids the use of 'war' to describe the invasion in Ukraine, and the use of only Russian state media sources. Independent journalism is the focus of her new documentary called 'Tango with Putin', which has just been released.
