The Kyiv Declaration: Agencies unite to appeal to the world

The Kyiv Declaration requests include humanitarian corridors so people can leave the country more safely, more military aid and a ramping up of sanctions.

The United Nations's refugee agency says a million people have now fled Ukraine since Russia invaded a week ago, and hundreds of civilians are believed to have been killed. There's no shortage of supportive sentiment from the international community for Ukraine, but what does the country need in practical terms? Civil society groups across the country have tried to answer that question with the Kyiv Declaration.

Oleksandr Pavlichenko, the Executive Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group for Human Rights, explains what the country needs. He says the Kyiv Declaration is a way to bring together the civil society groups, agencies and NGOs, for a united approach. Among their demands is the organisation of corridors so people can leave the country safely, as many are being attacked as they flee, the continuation of military aid and a ramping up of sanctions and freezing assets. He says that Russia is currently ignoring the International Humanitarian Law requirements. and hopes the declaration will encourage them to observe them.
