Mum in Kyiv: 'If I say run, we run to the shelter'

Olena is currently sheltering in a makeshift bomb shelter in Kyiv with her three young children: a 4-month-old, a 5-year-old, and a 7-year-old. Evacuation with them is too difficult and too dangerous.

Olena spoke to ѿý Radio 5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake about what her children understand of the conflict, and how she communicates the danger to them.

“Children hear the explosions and I'm telling them if this is like 'boom, boom', this is far away, so don't be afraid. If you hear 'sssshhhhh', that means this is the missile flying and this is the most dangerous sound.” says Olena.

“So, we have like the words, if I say, 'run', we run to the shelter. If I say, 'hide', we just lie down to the nearest wall and cover our heads with our hands and keep our mouths open,” she continues.
