Ukraine: Red Cross evacuation in Mariupol collapses

As Ukraine's city Mariupol faces constant shelling and attacks, huge numbers of people are desperate to leave.

An attempt to start evacuating 200,000 people out of the city collapsed for a second day on Sunday. This was due to constant attacks from Russian forces creating a danger zone making it extremely difficult for civilians attempting to leave, and for rescue operations to take place.

Crystal Wells is the spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross, based in Geneva.

Speaking to Newsday, she said "People living in Mariupol are going through hell right now, and this is just one city, many people in other cities are also suffering hugely as a result of this conflict, and it's incredibly frustrating that we can't get those who want to leave out of cities. It's incredibly frustrating that we are struggling to be able to scale up and provide aid in the way that we would like to".
