Ukraine war: Melitopol resident describes life under Russian rule

"If they claim they came to defend the Russian speakers, I’ve got a message for them. I don’t need to be defended."

The port city of Melitopol lies on the south coast of Ukraine. Russian forces took control of it in the first days of the invasion.

ѿý Newsday got a rare insight of what life is like under Russian rule from Marina, a local resident who sent us this recording just before she got out of the city. We have voiced it up in English.

She says all roads in have been blocked by Russian forces and “the only information we are getting is via Russian TV and Luhansk Republic Radio.”

She says locals are promised “a better life”. That they will have all their debts cancelled and that they will get Russian pensions but “since very few people support the so-called Russian order they bring in extras from Russia by buses to show them on TV.”
