Ukraine war: Our little 'man of the world' was just hours old when we fled

Eugene Zyablin, his wife, two daughters and newborn son made their escape as Russian air strikes attacked Kharkiv.

More than three million people have now fled Ukraine because of the Russian invasion, according to the United Nations (UN). Refugees are crossing to neighbouring countries to the west, such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Moldova. Close to three million Ukrainians have passed into Poland. Trains heading towards Ukraine's border have been packed, and there have been long queues of traffic on roads leading out of the country.

Eugene Zyablin, his wife, two daughters and newborn son fled Kharkiv shortly after he was born. Eugene describes how the maternity hospital was hit just hours after his birth, and after taking refuge in the unlit and unheated hospital basement, they drove to Ukraine's western border. They travelled through Hungary and Austria, before arriving in Germany, where they have been met with "understanding and compassion". They've called the baby Oliver, which, he admits, is not a typically Ukrainian name but they decided he will be "a man of the world" as he has already travelled through so many different countries.
