Ketanji Brown Jackson: Hearings begin for US Supreme Court nominee

Four days of confirmation hearings are taking place on Capitol Hill, for the first black woman justice in the US Supreme Court.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, the 51-year-old former federal public defender said she judged cases from a neutral position and vowed to be independent if her appointment is confirmed. She has told senators she will apply the law "without fear or favour".

If successful, she will be the first black woman justice in the highest US court.

Christine Schiffner, Bureau Chief of the National Law Journal, told Newsday: "She's of course well qualified, the American Bar Association just came out last Friday, fully supporting her nomination, also because she is bringing this kind of different experience to the bench."
