Ukraine war: 'Nothing has changed since Sarajevo'
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ recently broadcast a letter to Ukraine and Ukrainians, written by a Bosnian journalist who endured the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996. It was a brutal conflict with people there living under daily shelling and sniper attacks from Serbian nationalist forces, and parallels are now being drawn with the war in Ukraine.
Aida Cerkez's letter has been retweeted thousands of times. She spoke to Newsday to discuss the response and her message, saying, "It makes me feel that, nothing has changed, it's the same pictures, the same faces, the same suffering, but just higher resolution pictures." One thing she does feel has changed since then, however, is the world's response, in that people now recognise what the different sides represent, and the moral judgements that need to be made.
