Could Ukraine defeat the Russian invaders?

A former US government adviser believes Ukraine is "winning" the conflict with Russia, at the moment.

Ever since the Russians invaded Ukraine there has been a narrative of the resilient Ukrainians defending their land against superior forces which may ultimately overwhelm them. But could the evidence on the ground support another narrative?

Despite the bombing and destruction of cities across Ukraine, could President Volodymyr Zelensky be actually winning this war? Eliot A. Cohen is a contributing writer at The Atlantic and a former Counsellor of the US Department of State and he's been telling Newsday why he thinks all is not lost for Ukrainians.

"What we are seeing is a Russian military which is failing - 10,000 killed in three weeks compared to Afghanistan where they lost 15,000 soldiers [in total]... half a dozen Russian generals killed at the front. Largely a conscription force... that is beginning to fray. The idea that it is an invincible, implacable force is not true at all."

"The Ukrainians are winning...at the moment but that could change. There's a lot more [the West] can do. We're frightening ourselves. When you're in a war you don't play along with the other guy's desire to intimidate you."
