'US needs 30,000 troops in Poland to deter Putin'
Senior Polish MEP, Radek Sikorski, says Nato's post-Cold War disarmament went too far
Poland has welcomed more than 2 million refugees over the last 4 weeks and shown unprecedented generosity. There is also a sense of anxiety growing in the country. The government has announced an increase in defence spending from 2.2 to 3% of GDP and taken steps to reduce Russian influence in Poland’s economy.
Dmitri Medvedv, the former Russian president, has since slammed the Polish government for its new policy towards Russia decrying Poles for favouring the Germans who brutally invaded the country in World War Two - under Nazi leaders - over Russians who liberated them.
Polish former defence and foreign minister, Radek Sikorski, who is now based in Brussels as a Member of the European Parliament told Newsday there is genuine concern in states bordering Russia.
"There's a widespread fear of Russia all over the region because of what Russia is doing; I think it is entirely justified. Ukrainians have already destroyed more Russian tanks than either Germany, or France or Britain have in their inventories."
"The US needs the kind of presence in Poland that it used to have in Germany during the Cold War - a minimum of 30,000 troops to deter Putin."
