Ukraine: Concerns of disappearances as Russia advances

Reports are emerging that the occupying Russian forces in Ukraine have drawn up lists of civilians they wish to detain.

Allegations are emerging of Ukrainians going into hiding to avoid being picked up by occupying Russian forces who are said to have drawn up lists of civilians they wish to detain. Identified people include veterans of the 2014 fighting in eastern Ukraine, journalists and civil society activists.

It is something that has been well-documented in Crimea and the two separatist republics of Luhansk and Donetsk for the last seven years. Now it may be happening again. Mattia Nelles - a political analyst based in Kyiv, but currently in Germany - told Newsday if captured these people were either being sent to camps or found dead.

"My family member remains in hiding. We know the police of the Russian Federation have come to his house for him. Not a rag-tag militia - they come with buses and have lists."

"We know this playbook from Crimea. The warnings are there. It’s very important we shed light on the people who go missing. That their names are not forgotten. That Ukrainians and other keep pushing for their release.”
