Ukraine: 'The lesson today for children is, this is a war'
The United Nations says some ten million people have now fled their homes in Ukraine and more than half of the country's children have been displaced, after one month of war. There are grave concerns and fears for the future consequences of this disruption to their lives.
James Elder from Unicef has been helping children and families in Ukraine, and spoke to Newsday whilst in the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv.
He said: "We're seeing the beginnings of that stress and trauma, whether it's when I'm at train stations and I'm watching this incredible outflux of people, and every time I turn around, there are more tears. There is a husband and a wife embracing for what may be the last time, there is a father trying to explain to his 7-year-old daughter why dad is leaving, and invariably these children have been in bunkers. The lesson today for children, is this is a war."
