Brazil election: Could support for Jair Bolsonaro be slipping away?

Approval ratings for the Brazilian president have slumped because of his handing of the pandemic and a stagnating financial situation.

Brazilian elections for a new president will take place in October this year. The president, Jair Bolsonaro, was at a rally this week which, although it took place before election campaigning can officially begin, presented clues to the rhetoric he hopes will bring him back to power.

Ana Ionova, a freelance journalist based in Rio de Janeiro, says "support for him is plummeting, and approval ratings have been battered" by his handling of the pandemic and rising poverty. She says he's doubling down on claims of anti-corruption, while his own administration is facing bribery charges, and attacks on ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is leading in the polls - both of which are similar to the claims that swept him to power in 2018.

However, she believes that many Brazilians are frustrated with the stagnating financial situation and that his support base could be deserting him, even the increasingly influential evangelicals, who gave him 75% of his votes in 2018.
