Academy begins proceedings against actor Will Smith
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has initiated disciplinary proceedings, following the actor slapping comedian Chris Rock during the most recent Oscar's ceremony.
The World's biggest film organisation, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said on Wednesday that their Board of Governors have initiated disciplinary proceedings against actor Will Smith.
According to a statement, they said they are taking action against Mr Smith for "violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy".
This is following the incident which involved Mr Smith walking on stage during the recent Oscar's ceremony, and slapping Chris Rock.
Comedian Chris Rock had made a joke about the hairstyle of Mr Smith's wife, Jada Pinkettt Smith, who suffers from alopecia, which triggered the incident.
Twenty minutes after this took place, Will Smith accepted an award for Best Actor for the film King Richard, and went on to celebrate the evening's events. He has since released a statement apologising for what had occurred.
Hollywood reporter Jeanne Wolf, told Newsday "It's a slap, seen around the world, it's embarrassing to the Academy, and there are opinions flying in every direction. Now I can tell you, I've known Will Smith for a long time, and if there's anybody I would have guessed or bet, could never do something like this, it's him. He just snapped."
