Chernihiv: Northern Ukrainian city bombarded despite promises of de-escalation

Many people are left without electricity, gas or running water, and tens of thousands of individuals remain trapped within the city.

Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine, continues to be hit by bombs and shells.

Russia announced it would reduce its military operations around both Chernihiv and Ukraine's capital Kyiv in an effort to "boost mutual trust" in peace talks.

However, heavy attacks continue according to the region's governor, Viacheslav Chaus.

Many people are left without electricity, gas or running water, and tens of thousands of individuals remain trapped within the city.

Some locals claim civilian buildings and residential areas are being deliberately targeted.

Newsday spoke to Marina, a resident of Chernihiv, who said, "We can't sleep in our homes, so we continue to sleep in the basement. The two last nights, they were just really terrible. We heard bombs in our city, central parts as well. Yesterday there was damage to central parts, central market, shop mall, post office, as well as a children's library, so how can we say that they reduce their military stuff here?".
