Canadian First Nations call on Pope to acknowledge historic abuse

Many Canadian First Nations people suffered abuse in Catholic-run institutions and schools and want the Pope to apologise.

Delegates from Canada's First Nations community are calling on Pope Francis to acknowledge the historic abuse suffered by native communities in Catholic-run institutions and schools. It's estimated that around 150,000 children of the First Nations community in Canada were forcibly separated from their families.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged the Catholic Church to "take responsibility" for its role in running indigenous residential schools and the abuse experienced by the children there. One individual who went through Canada's residential school system and suffered abuse is David Luggi. He is a member of the Carrier Nation, a large native community in British Columbia. He describes the abuse that he and others experienced at the institution he attended and the impact this has had on their lives.

"It's important for all of us that the Pope acknowledges the abuse and trauma that has been inflicted upon us by the colonial Catholic Church."
