New Covid-19 vaccine approved by Botswana

A new vaccine against Covid-19 has been approved for use in Botswana.

The vaccine known as CORBEVAX, was developed in the US state of Texas, and began production in South Africa in January.

Corbevax has no patent, which means that it can be bought by other countries, without high cost.

It's already seen approval in other countries too such as India, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

CORBEVAX was first initiated by South African-born medical doctor and tech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong.

He told Newsday: "With the opportunity that I have, of being able to transfer knowledge and technology, as someone whose actually manufactured large numbers of inject-able drugs in the United States, I think this is an exciting opportunity to actually generate self-reliance, in Sub Saharan Africa, for all of Africa".
