South Africa lifts Covid restrictions

South Africa has lifted almost all remaining coronavirus restrictions two years after they were first imposed, although masks will still be required indoors for another month. In a televised address, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that although the pandemic was not over, he was confident that there were better times ahead.

Dr Angelique Coetzee is the South African doctor who first spotted the Omicron Covid variant. She says the change is long overdue and that the country needed to move out of a disaster management phase. She says the average citizen has had enough of the restrictions. However, she emphasises that South Africa is not yet out of the pandemic: "We should not let our guards down."
