Oklahoma: Lawmakers pass vote on near-total abortion ban
Lawmakers in the state of Oklahoma have voted overwhelmingly for a Republican bill that would make performing an abortion illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The law makes an exception only if the life of the mother is in danger.
We speak to Alina Salganicoff in San Francisco, from the non-profit organisation the Kaiser Family Foundation. She says the bill has yet to go through the local governor but it is likely that it will be passed. She says that for many this is a significant step backwards. Oklahoma has a history of being an anti-abortion state. A number of Republican-led American states have brought in or are trying to bring in legislation that bans abortion in some form. And the 1973 Roe v Wade judgement, that gave women in America the right to have an abortion, could well be overturned by the Supreme Court in the coming months.
