‘If you create the right environment, nature will find a way to move in’

Joining Steve Stuttard on his balcony is a pair of mallard ducks to nest their 13 eggs.

Steve tells 5 Live’s Clare McDonnell they return every year to nest in his box planters; “if you create the right environment nature will find a way to move in”.

He explained ‘Mrs Mallard’ sits for “23 hours a day” on the eggs and when they hatch it will total “40 ducklings in three years”.

Steve estimated that the ducklings should hatch on 25 April, when he will use a “bucket and a long piece of rope” to help move the ducklings down to the ground floor.

Within 30 seconds they are down to the “quayside and in the water” with their mother.
