Ukraine: Areas held by Russian troops re-open to residents
Hostomel was one of the first villages around Kyiv to be attacked by Russian forces. It was occupied for 35 days but is now due to re-open to its former residents.
Dmytro Lisovyy managed to escape the city along with his family before his parents’ house was taken over by Russian forces.
He tells Newsday he has no plans to return anytime soon: “They lived in our house. They stole things. They destroyed some things… it is too dangerous to return there… we have no electricity, no gas and bridges have been destroyed. Even if you have a home there, you have no place to return.”
