Is Yemen on the brink of lasting peace?
As the president of the internationally recognised government of Yemen hands over his powers to a new presidential council, some analysts suggest this could mark the end of the long-running conflict.
The move by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has been welcomed by Saudi Arabia, which is urging the new council to negotiate with the Houthi rebels for a comprehensive political solution to the war.
Adam Baron is a political analyst focusing on the Middle East with an emphasis on Yemen. He tells Newsday that “there is widespread expectation there could be a breakthrough…as early as the end of this week”.
