South Sudan's hidden comedy

People in South Sudan have had to deal with lots of trauma over the last few decades – from years of conflict as part of Sudan, to a new civil war that broke out shortly after independence in 2011. And we’ve heard in the programme on recent days about new fears for the state of the peace process as elections approach. Those might have been dispelled somewhat with the signing on Sunday by President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar of the deal on joint military control. But there is of course much more to the country than conflict and tensions. This weekend, South Sudan will hold its first ever international comedy festival, featuring home grown stars as well as comedians from Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. Its organiser is the South Sudanese comedian Akau Jambo.
