Ketanji Brown Jackson: US Senate confirms judge to the Supreme Court
The US Senate has voted to confirm justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. For the first time in its 233-year history the court is to include a black female justice. Her appointment was sealed by a vote of 53 to 47.
Christine Schiffner, the bureau chief of the National Law Journal, explains the significance of this nomination. It is a historic decision because she is the first Supreme Court justice since Thurgood Marshall to have experience representing criminal defendants and as a trial judge. It is also time for a change and for the Supreme Court to reflect the diverse face of the nation. However, with the current court having a 6-3 Conservative majority, it will not be easy for Ms Jackson to shift the ideological balance of the court.
