UK's Muslim families struggling to afford food
Islamic charities say half of Muslim families could struggle to buy food to break their fasts this Ramadan.
Many people have been hit by the rise in the cost of living but some Islamic charities say the Muslim community has been disproportionately affected. They're warning that half of Muslim families in the UK could be unable to feed their families this Ramadan and are reporting they're having to skip meals so their children can eat.
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ reporter Shabnam Mahmood has been to a food bank (a place where food can be donated and then distributed to people in need) in east London. Families she met there say they are struggling to make ends meet as prices rise, and to put food on the table to break their fast during Ramadan. A worker at the food bank says that while demand increases, donations, which are usually higher during Ramadan, have fallen from 100% to 20%.
"Fifty per cent of Muslims are living in poverty in the UK and we're concerned this means they will struggle to put a meal on the table at the end of a fasting day." (Islamic Relief spokesperson)
