Hundreds of thousands leave Mariupol

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, one city that has been a core target for ongoing attacks is Mariupol.

The strategically important port city in the south of Ukraine has been besieged for six weeks.

Civilians have suffered as the city has come under devastating attacks, and hundreds of thousands of people have now escaped from the region.

However, yesterday Russia claimed over 1000 Ukrainian soldiers have surrendered in the area.

Ukrainian authorities in Kyiv have yet to confirm this.

Newsday spoke to one Ukrainian fighter from Mariupol who managed to get out of the city in the last few days.

He recalls what he experienced when there, saying: "We've witnessed all kinds of crimes and destruction, I filmed how the Russian planes bombed civilian houses, I've been doing it from the top of the 12 storey building, risking my life".
