Rwanda asylum seekers: 'We are already helping vulnerable people around the world'

Refugee groups and charities have condemned the British government's deal to send some migrants and asylum seekers arriving in the UK to Rwanda to have their asylum claims processed.

Rwanda is to receive an initial payment of more than $150m for taking part in the programme.

The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said this system would reduce people-smuggling and discourage people from trying to reach Britain in rubber dinghies.

To get the perspective from Rwanda, Newsday spoke to Doris Uwicyeza Picard, chief technical advisor to the Rwandan Minister of Justice.

"We do not recognise this Rwanda that is always being described... we pride ourselves in providing safety to those fleeing danger. Rwanda already provides refuge for almost 130,000 refugees from multiple countries including neighbouring countries like DRC and Burundi."
