‘The majority of teachers feel they don’t know how to teach a deaf child’
The National Deaf Children’s Society wants the government to implement deaf awareness training for all teachers.
Susan Daniels wants teachers to feel more confident “when they meet [a deaf child] in their class.”
She tells 5 Live’s Clare McDonnell that she expects teachers to have “basic deaf awareness training” whilst understanding that teachers aren’t expected “to be experts in all disability.”
As someone with a hearing impairment, Susan explains “it can be a very lonely and isolating experience” for a deaf child within the education system.
Deaf children can “fall one grade behind at GCSE level.”
With the recommended guidance, teachers would know how to “adapt” their teaching methods to accommodate deaf children. Whilst also ensuring “other children spoke in a way that the deaf child would understand.”
