Can Nigeria's new high speed internet cable connect local businesses to the world?

Google’s Equiano subsea cable has been connected in Lagos, Nigeria. The company's head in Africa, Nitin Gajria, says the cable will bring 20 times the capacity of previous cables serving the region and will meet the demand of more than 500 million new internet users over the next six-seven years.

Google says the high speed network will eventually stretch beyond Lagos, across Nigeria and to neighbouring countries. There are claims better connectivity could create 1.6 million jobs and boost Nigeria's economy by $10bn by 2025.

Gajrai says greater connectivity can create new opportunities for Nigerians: "It can open up global markets to what used to be community driven businesses."
