Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have declared a new Ebola outbreak, after a case was confirmed in the city of Mbandaka.

This is the third outbreak in the province since 2018 and the fourteenth Ebola outbreak for the country since 1976.

Dr Fiona Braka is Team Lead for Emergency Operations at the World Health Organization. She tells Newsday because of the history of Ebola in DRC, “a lot of capacities have been built that the authorities have been able to mount a quick response to try and identify all these contacts... moving swiftly is of the utmost importance.”
