Viola Davis: How a life of poverty and abuse gave way to joy

Viola Davis has won an Emmy, an Oscar and a Tony, and is the first African-American to win all three awards. She has recently portrayed Michelle Obama in new US TV drama The First Lady.

Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2012 and 2017. She is now about to release her memoir, Finding Me, which charts her rise from poverty and abuse. She grew up in Central Falls, Rhode Island, in a building infested with rats, often with no hot water, gas or electricity.

Viola Davis says that she expects some fallout from her family but felt that honesty was more important. She says growing up was a "fight for survival", but by concentrating on what she loved, she found success.

"Everything was a fight. It was a fight for basic survival."
