Aung San Suu Kyi: Myanmar's ex-leader given more jail time

Myanmar's ex-leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is sentenced to five years in prison, in the latest verdict in a series of secret trials.

A court in Myanmar has sentenced the country's detained political leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who is 76, to five years in prison after finding her guilty of corruption.

The case centred on allegations that the deposed leader accepted $600,000 worth of gold from the former Yangon chief minister - allegations she dismisses as absurd. It's just the first of several corruption charges brought by the military junta against the Nobel laureate who was forced from power in a coup in early 2021.

Aung Kyaw Moe is a human rights activist and adviser to the National Unity government, a political opposition grouping who denounce the Burmese military junta takeover. He gave his reaction to Newsday shortly after the announcement of the verdict.

"She is facing a total of ten cases which could lead to a total of 15 years. The international community knows these are false accusations. She has been restricted, speaking to the media has been strictly prohibited."

"I think the country is moving in the right direction. The people are resisting the junta, they cannot rule the country. People are upset. The junta need to pay a price."
