Up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded - UN
A new report from the United Nations warns that land misuse is threatening the survival of many of the planet’s species - including our own.
Land Degradation according to the United Nations is "the result of human-induced actions which exploit land, causing its utility, biodiversity, soil fertility, and overall health to decline".
Up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of humanity, with sub-Saharan Africa worst affected.
Most of the damage by people has come from food production, but consumption of other goods such as clothes also makes a big contribution.
Barron Orr is the lead scientist at United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) spoke to Newsday from Germany.
