'A third of bread consumed in Africa comes from Ukraine'
South African politician and leader of the opposition Democratic Alliance Party, John Steenhuisen, is on a six-day fact-finding mission to Ukraine.
He’s the first African politician to visit the country since the outbreak of war in February, and it comes as African countries have remained largely neutral over Russia's invasion.
South Africa's own stance on the matter is the subject of some controversy. Newsday spoke to Mr Steenhuisen who's is in the capital Kyiv:
"We've already seen significant food price rises in Africa and large parts of Africa are reliant on grains, oils and products that come out of this region to be able to sustain themselves. One in every three slices of bread that are consumed in Africa and the Middle East come from Ukraine".
