Buffalo shooting: Ten dead in racially motivated attack

President Biden will visit Buffalo on Tuesday to meet members of the community after 10 people were shot dead in an attack described as an act of racially motivated violent extremism.

The suspect, named as Payton Gendron, reportedly drove more than 320km to carry out the attack.

The Mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown, has said the attacker intended to take "as many black lives as possible".

Damon Hewitt is the President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, he told Newsday the attack feels all too familiar.

"These killings like so many we have seen are disturbing, infuriating, heart-wrenching and unnecessary. We know what's happening in terms of the rhetoric, we know what's happening in terms of the violence and the access to arms, but we're not doing enough to stop it".
