'I went to the Central African Republic as a UN peacekeeper, and ended up adopting'

Zambian army captain Mwila Chansa recently adopted a child and brought her back to Zambia from the war-torn Central African Republic (CAR). The captain was deployed there as a United Nations peacekeeper.

The baby's mother, who was carrying twins died with the other child while giving birth in Birao, a town on the CAR border with Sudan and Chad.

The story of the child named Thabo has captivated Zambians.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema heralded Captain Chansa for demonstrating humanity in her work.

Newsday spoke to Captain Mwila from Lusaka, Zambia.
