Anthony Albanese sworn in as Australia's 31st Prime Minister
He is the first Labour leader to hold the title in almost a decade.
Australia's new Prime Minister has been sworn in: Anthony Albanese of the Labour Party saw his oath of office brought forward so he could fly to Tokyo to attend a summit with the leaders of the United States, India and Japan.
Over the weekend the new Prime Minister spoke of cementing Indigenous rights in the constitution, economic and social reforms as well nods to his mother and his humble beginnings:
"My fellow Australians, it says a lot about our great country that a son of a single mum who was a disability pensioner, who grew up in public housing down the road in Camperdown can stand before you tonight as Australia's prime minister."
For more on the election and upcoming days ahead, Newsday spoke to Amy Remeikis, Guardian Australia's political reporter who's in Canberra.
