Royal memories: ‘I won a space to watch the Queen’s coronation’
Jean Styles has met the Queen twice, the first in 1945 when she presented a bouquet to the Queen consort and the young Princess Elizabeth was accompanying her.
The second time was when Jean won a space in a window overlooking the Mall to watch the Queen’s coronation procession pass.
Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Jean says watching the gold coach pass was “wonderful”, but another highlight of the day was the buffet.
“Although rationing was coming to an end, there were things we were short of,” she says. “To see a wonderful buffet going on was great… bananas and things like that we’d missed through the war.”
