Mona Lisa: Man dressed as old woman throws cake at painting
A man disguised as an elderly woman tried to attack Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Reports say he leapt from a wheelchair in the Louvre Museum in Paris and tried to smash the protective screen, and then threw cake at the painting. The piece, which was undamaged, was left with white cream smeared across its protective glass.
Donald Sassoon, a professor of Comparative European History describes the drama and confirms the painting was not harmed as it is behind two sheets of bulletproof, triple-laminated glass. He says the Mona Lisa is "better protected than the president of France", and this is yet another adventure for the painting, which was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 by an Italian immigrant who worked at the museum at the time.
