‘In other parts of our lives, we take steps to mitigate our effect on the planet’
Keri from Brighton had his tyres deflated by climate activists ‘Tyre Extinguishers’.
Keri from Brighton told 5 Live that he woke up to discover the tyres on his SUV had been deflated by a climate group called the ‘tyre extinguishers’.
Alongside his punctured tyres, a note was left telling Keri that his SUV was seen as a ‘gas-guzzling machine’ and that it ‘shouldn’t be driven in cities’.
Keri spoke to Naga Munchetty about his job as a mobile optometrist; “I have to carry a lot of equipment around with me”, along with car-crates for his “two dogs”.
“I understand where [the activists are] coming from, but they don’t know what an individual does that owns that vehicle- they don’t know what that person does for the planet.”
“In other parts of our lives, we take steps to mitigate our effect on the planet”- Keri explained that he doesn’t have “meat or dairy, for their effect on the planet and [he has] booked to travel to Italy on the train, so [he’s] not taking short haul flights”.
5 Live contacted the ‘Tyre Extinguishers’ for a statement: “We can’t ignore the fact that the increasing pace of SUV buying is cancelling out all the carbon savings from people switching to electric cars”.
