Ryanair demands South Africans to do Afrikaans test
Ryanair is making South African nationals take a general knowledge test in Afrikaans to prove their nationality before boarding flights to the UK and Europe. The airline says those passengers unable to complete it will be refused travel and issued with a refund.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Afrikaans Language Board, Conrad Steenkamp, describes the move as “absurd”, adding that he does not understand why Ryanair singled out Afrikaans, as the country has 11 official languages.
Jared Ruttenberg is a journalist in South Africa. He says the test “will be a deeply triggering thing for many South Africans to be told that they need to complete this in a language that they cannot do”.
