Gupta brothers arrested in UAE
A long-running political corruption scandal in South Africa has taken a major step forward, as the controversial Gupta brothers have been detained in the United Arab Emirates, following an international arrest warrant.
Rajesh and Atul Gupta are wanted in connection with fraud and money laundering charges, connected to misappropriated state funds and influencing cabinet appointments during Jacob Zuma's Presidency of South Africa. Both the Guptas and Mr Zuma deny any wrongdoing.
Karyn Maughan is the legal reporter for News24 in South Africa. She tells Newsday that the authorities are “on the brink of bringing forward an extradition application that may well result in these brothers finally facing trial in South Africa”.
