China and Cambodia deny naval base scheme
Both China and Cambodia have denied reports published in The Washington Post
Cambodia and Beijing have denied a report that they are building a secret naval facility for the Chinese fleet.
The Washington Post, citing unnamed western officials, said a new facility at Cambodia’s Ream base – strategically located on the Gulf of Thailand – was being built for the “exclusive” use of the Chinese navy.
Former Chinese diplomat and Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization, Victor Gao, tells Newsday: “We need to treat this allegation as false… China does not rely on military might or military bases in foreign countries to achieve its national goal. China promotes peace…it will not be surprising if this is truly a very important connectivity project that China and many other countries are building throughout the world.”
